HL Deb 21 November 1984 vol 457 c676WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will now seek to establish what in fact is the amount of the actual, but hidden, subsidy which the taxpayer each year makes to the nuclear operators, since statutory limitations on their third party liability allowed them by the Government reduce their requirement for cover from the insurance market; and what other hidden subsidies the taxpayer is now making to what other industries and has in the past made.

The Minister of State, Scottish Office (Lord Gray of Contin)

The arrangements for covering the third party liability of nuclear operators are as set out in Lord Avon's answer to the noble Lord on 29th March 1984 (col. 466–67).

There are no hidden subsidies by the taxpayer to the energy industries.
