HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 cc65-6W
Mr. Evennett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps his Department is taking to encourage preventive dental care.

Mr. John Patten

Special grants were made available in 1983–84 to regional health authorities to stimulate local dental health education programmes and surveys and the Health Education Council is to launch a national dental health campaign in 1985. A new school of dental hygiene has been created at Sheffield and additional hygenist training places have been funded at King's college, London. An experimental capitation remuneration scheme for the dental treatment of children has been initiated which it is hoped will develop continuity of care and the promotion of prevention for the individual patients.
