HL Deb 15 November 1984 vol 457 c480WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they and our European Community partners support the plea of the UN Secretary-General for an extended role for UN Interim Forces in the Lebanon (UNIFIL) in occupied Southern Lebanon and the re-establishment of the authority of the Lebanese Government: and what action they are taking to this end, with what prospects of success.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces (Lord Trefgarne)

We and other European Community countries have commended the United Nations Secretary-General's proposals for an extended role for UNIFIL to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces from South Lebanon. We have made our views clear to all the parties concerned and at the United Nations in New York. We hope that the present opportunity for early Israeli withdrawal, and the re-establishment of Lebanese sovereignty in the area, will not be missed.
