§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many projects the Medical Research Council has labelled approved but not funded in the last year; which projects they are; and what plans there are for their future funding and research.
§ Mr. BrookeIn the academic year 1983–84 the Medical Research Council approved but was unable to fund 199 applications for project grants — usually of three years' duration—and 22 applications for longer-term support for research programmes. I understand that the projects cover a wide range of biomedical research, but that their details are regarded as confidential as between the council and the applicants. I understand that the council has no plans for a systematic reconsideration of these applications.
