HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 cc141-2W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people were employed in the National Health Service in England and Wales at the latest date; what were the corresponding figures for June 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The total number of NHS directly employed staff in England at 31 March 1984 (the latest date for which an overall total is available) was 819,100 (whole-time equivalent). Figures are not available for June 1979, since quarterly staffing returns had not been introduced at that time. The corresponding figure for September 1979 was 773,300. Details of the figures are in the Library.

Statistics on the NHS in Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people were employed by the Mersey regional health authority at the latest date; what was the corresponding figure for June 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The total number of NHS directly employed staff in Mersey RHA at 31 March 1984 (the latest date for which an overall total is available) was 43,900 (whole time equivalents). No figures are available for June 1979 since quarterly staffing returns had not been introduced at that time. The corresponding figure for September 1979 (which was the annual collection date) was 43,300.

Notes:

  1. 1. The figures quoted include agency nursing staff and locum medical and dental staff. They exclude hospital practitioners, part-time medical officers (clinical assistants), general medical practitioners participating in hospital staff funds and occasional sessional staff in community health services.
  2. 2. The latest date for which a count of total NHS staff in England is available is March 1984, since information on medical and dental staff is not collected quarterly.
