asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give an up-to-date breakdown of the organisations and projects which have benefited from the Government's special aid programme for inner city areas, since 1981.

Of the 21,000 projects worth some £830 million supported under the urban programme since 1981, 66 per cent. were run by local authorities, 30 per cent. by voluntary organisations, and 4 per cent. by private organisations. By project type, 35 per cent. of the total number of projects were economic, 17 per cent. environmental and 48 per cent. social.
