HC Deb 24 May 1984 vol 60 cc472-3W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has prevented women prisoners in H wing at Her Majesty's prison, Durham, from using the facilities to prepare and cook meals previously used by male prisoners on that wing.

Mr. Hurd

These facilities were removed in 1971 when H wing was converted to use by category B sentenced male prisoners. The need to provide a range of other facilities when H wing was transferred back to the female system in 1974 prevented their re-instatement. At present there are snack-making facilities, however, and we intend shortly to provide a kitchenette with a cooker, sink, cupboards and refrigerator, by means of which they will be able further to supplement their diet.
