HC Deb 24 May 1984 vol 60 cc478-9W
Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many female employees in his Department have been granted maternity leave in each year since 1974; and what was the total duration of such leave in each of those years.

Mr. Hayhoe

Records of the number of female employees in Her Majesty's Treasury who have been granted maternity leave are available only from 1977–78 and are kept by financial rather than calendar year.

The details are:

Numbers Total Duration
1977–78 9 2⅔ years
1978–79 2 6 months
1979–80 3 9 months
1980–81 1 3 months
1981–82 10 2¼ years
1982–83 9 2⅔ years
1983–84 13 3⅔ years

The increase in the number of cases from 1981–82 followed the Transfer of Functions (Minister for the Civil Service and Treasury) Order 1981 (S.I. No. 1680) which provided for the transfer of certain functions and the staff employed thereon from the Civil Service Department to the Treasury on 7 December 1981.
