Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many companies have either closed down or announced redundancies in Dundee since 1980; and what was the number of redundancies involved.

Mr. Allan Stewart

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many men are unemployed in Dundee at present who have been out of work for one year or over; what percentage of the total number of unemployed males they account for; and what are the corresponding figures for 1980.

Mr. Allan Stewart

On 5 April 1984, the latest date for which information is available, 4,770 male claimants in the Dundee jobcentre area had been unemployed for over 52 weeks. This represented 45.3 per cent. of the total male claimants in the area. On 10 April 1980, the number of males in the area registered as unemployed for more than 52 weeks totalled 1,719. This represented 30 per cent. of the total male registrants at that date.

These figures are not directly comparable due to the change from a registrant to a claimant based count in October 1982.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average annual number of people unemployed in Dundee in 1954, 1964, 1974 and for the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The annual average number of unemployed registrants in the Dundee jobcentre area for the years 1954, 1964 and 1974 were 2,238, 2,457 and 3,871 respectively. The average annual number of unemployed claimants in 1983 was 15,943.

Adult students are included in the figures for 1954, 1964 and 1974 but are excluded from the 1983 figure. The figures are not directly comparable for this reason and because of the change in October 1982 from a registrant to a claimant based count.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of women currently unemployed in Dundee; and what was the corresponding figure for May 1980.

Mr. Allan Stewart

On 5 April 1984, the latest date for which information is available, there were 5,485 female claimants in the Dundee jobcentre area. On 8 May 1980 there were 3,533 females registered as unemployed in the area. These figures are not directly comparable due to the change in October 1982 from a registrant to a claimant based count.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average length of time spent on the unemployment register by age-group in Scotland; and what are the corresponding figures for Dundee.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The table below shows the median length of unemployment in Scotland and in the Dundee jobcentre area by age group for all claimants who ceased being unemployed between 13 Janaury 1984 and 5 April 1984, the latest date for which information is available.

Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland pursuant to the answer of the hon. Member for Eastwood (Mr. Stewart) of 16 May to the hon. Member for Glasgow, Maryhill, Official Report, column 351 regarding numbers employed in Scotland, (1) what was the increase in the second half of the last quarter of 1983 in the number of those employed in Scotland; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many of the increase in the employed labour force of 118,000 between September and December 1983 announced by the Secretary of State for Employment on 18 April are estimated to have arisen in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The increase in the number of employees in employment in Scotland between September and December 1983 is provisionally estimated, on a seasonally adjusted basis and including an adjustment for under-counting, to have been 7,000.

The estimate for the United Kingdom labour force has been similarly adjusted, but refers to a total which includes the armed forces and the self-employed in addition to employees in employment.
