HC Deb 18 May 1984 vol 60 c296W
Mr. Home Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for East Lothian on Tuesday 15 May, what doubt there is concerning the entitlement to unemployment benefit of Mr. D. Watters of 52 Polworth terrace, Prestonpans, who was given notice of redundancy on 20 December 1983.

Mr. Alan Clark

A person who is made redundant but who stops work because of a trade dispute during the notice period is liable to be disqualified from receiving unemployment benefit. The disqualification lasts as long as the stoppage of work continues even if this is some time after the redundancy takes effect.

The doubt on Mr. Watters' entitlement to unemployment benefit arises because although his date of redundancy was 17 March 1984 he last worked on 24 February 1984. His claim has therefore been suspended while further inquiries are made.
