§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeBy 31 March 1984, 65 officers had been prematurely retired in Mersey region as a result of the 1982 restructuring. The actual cost of compensation in respect of individual regions is not known, but the amount attributed to the region in respect of premature retirements occurring in 1983–84 and previous years on the basis of the average national costs was £174,000.
None of these officers is currently re-employed in the NHS.
