HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 c198W
Mr. David Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how workers who are organised in unions not affiliated to the Trades Union Congress and cover managers and professional employees are able to make their views known to the European Community Economic and Social Committee.

Mr. Gummer

[pursuant to his reply, 10 May 1984, c. 458]: Any employee may make representations on a matter to do with employment to the United Kingdom members of the Economic and Social Committee in group II (employees). These members were appointed in their personal capacity to represent the interests of workers, whether or not they belong to a trade union.

Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if the Government require that members appointed by Her Majesty's Government to the European Community Economic and Social Committee, representing workers, should belong to unions affiliated to the Trades Union Congress.

Mr. Gummer

[pursuant to his reply, 10 May 1984, c. 458]: United Kingdom members of the Economic and Social Committee, appointed by the Council of Ministers on proposals from Her Majesty's Government, are organised in three groups: employers, employees and other interests. The eight members of group II (employees) belong to unions affiliated to the Trades Union Congress.
