HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 cc90-1W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Prime Minister if she will invite the views of Commonwealth countries on the main subjects to be discussed at the economic summit meeting in June.

The Prime Minister

I am already aware of the views of Commonwealth countries on international economic issues from the detailed discussions at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting last November. I would, of course, welcome any further views which Commonwealth leaders may wish to make known to us in advance of the summit.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Prime Minister what are the main subjects for discussion at the economic summit meeting in June; and if it is intended to discuss debt problems of the Third world.

The Prime Minister

The main subjects for discussion at the London economic summit will be developments in the world economy, how to consolidate recovery and spread its benefits without provoking a resurgence of inflation, the rollback of protectionism and the problems of debtor countries. I expect the summit to look at these problems in both the immediate and medium-term perspectives.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Prime Minister if the economic summit in June will be considering ways to improve financial flows from developed to developing countries.

The Prime Minister

As I have said in a separate answer to the hon. Member today, I expect the summit to discuss the problems faced by developing countries, particularly those of debtor countries. Maintaining adequate flows of resources to non-industrialised countries, and helping them to make the necessary economic changes, will be important elements in resolving those problems.
