asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, pursuant to the reply of 26 April, Official Report, column 601, when equal opportunities officers were designated within his Department; by whom such designation was made; and what the grades and duties of such officers are.

Sir Keith Joseph

The Department's equal opportunities officer is a senior executive officer who was appointed by the principal establishment officer on 30 March 1984. His duties include responsibility for the full scope of equal opportunity matters relating to race and sex discrimination. He is responsible for co-ordinating the Civil Service policy of non-discrimination within the Department and acts as the inter-departmental liaison officer with the Cabinet Office (MPO). He is the focal point within the Department for monitoring its equal opportunities policies and provides information and advice to management, individual members of staff and the departmental trade union side.
