asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest figure for those on hospital waiting lists; and how this compares with the equivalent figure last year.

The latest available figure for the number of people awaiting admission as hospital inpatients in England is 703,755 on 30 September 1983. This compares with 725,865 on 30 September 1982.
