HC Deb 03 May 1984 vol 59 c211W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many local education authorities have reintroduced selective secondary education since 1979; how may have drafted schemes for selection; and how many have subsequently dropped such schemes.

Mr. Dunn

Since 1979 one local education authority has re-established a grammar school for part of its area following the approval of statutory proposals by my right hon. Friend's predecessor. We only necessarily become aware of an authority's intention when it publishes proposals; it is not possible, therefore, to state the number of authorities which have considered but rejected the possibility of reintroducing selective secondary education.
