§ Mr. Altonasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on his Department's proposals to conserve energy.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerLast October I launched a campaign to eliminate energy waste, and set up the Energy Efficiency Office to lead a national effort to save 20 per cent. of the nation's energy bill.
Since then I and my Ministers have had 10 early morning meetings with senior executives with average attendances of over 300 and these meetings will continue in the coming months. The response has been most impressive. So far more than half of those attending these events have taken some form of follow-up action.
In addition, the Energy Efficiency Office has considerably extended the scope of its activities —extensive national and local publicity in the press and on television, an energy saver show aimed at the domestic consumer at major shopping centres, new and adapted schemes for the industrial and domestic sectors. The five market advisers from outside Government recently appointed will help to carry forward this campaign.
