asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how it is intended to select the six lay members who are to be appointed to the General Dental Council on 1 October.

Section 1(3) of the Dentists Act 1983 provides that three persons, who shall not be registered dentists, shall be chosen for England as members of the General Dental Council and one for each of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and that they shall be nominated by Her Majesty on the advice of her Privy Council. These appointments are for a five-year period from 1 October 1984. A list of candidates for these positions is currently being drawn up. My right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Social Services, for Scotland, for Wales and for Northern Ireland would welcome suggestions fort inclusion from interested organisations and individuals. These should be submitted in writing by Thursday 19 April.
