HC Deb 28 March 1984 vol 57 cc207-8W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what means nominee directors who represent Her Majesty's Government on the boards of public limited companies report back, or otherwise account for their activities.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 26 March 1984, c. 55]: Arrangements vary, but nominee directors can expect to be consulted by the Government from time to time and may, of course, themselves wish to bring appropriate matters to the Government's attention.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many nominee directors represent Her Majesty's Government on the boards of public limited companies; and whether he will list them by director and by company.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 26 March 1984, c. 55]: I shall write to the hon. Member.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what guidelines he lays down for nominee directors who represent Her Majesty's Government on the boards of public limited companies.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 26 March 1984, c. 55]: Guidelines for Government nominee directors are normally included in their letters of appointment. According to the requirements of the individual case involved, attention may be drawn to the general responsibilities of a company director, any specific provisions contained in the company's articles of association regarding a Government director, and the circumstances in which the Government may wish to seek his advice.
