HL Deb 28 March 1984 vol 450 c329WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In which coroners' areas of jurisdication they would use the power they propose to take to enable them to amalgamate such areas, in the event of implementation of Cmnd. 9063 and accompanying consultation papers.

Lord Elton

The encouragement of a smaller number of larger coroners' jurisdictions has been the long-established policy of successive Governments. It is difficult to forecast where the opportunity to use such powers may arise, but consideration is normally given to the possibility of a reduction in the number of districts by changes of boundaries whenever a vacancy occurs in the office of coroner in any jurisdiction. Any decision will take account of all the circumstances of the particular case.
