HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 cc151-2W
27. Mrs. Rumbold

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what levels of inspection for quality will be expected on imported lenses to ensure adequate protection for the consumer.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

At present NHS lenses supplied to patients obtaining glasses under the general ophthalmic service have to conform to British Standards. This requirement does not extend to privately supplied lenses. the Health and Social Security Bill will lead to a decrease in the number of persons being supplied with glasses under the GOS and a consequent increase in the number buying private lenses. We are considering using the powers contained in the Consumer Safety Act 1978 to require by regulation that in future all lenses supplied shall conform to the appropriate British Standards. This requirement would apply to imported and home produced lenses.
