HC Deb 23 March 1984 vol 56 c605W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will raise expenditure on support for the Gaelic language in Scotland in 1984–85 to a level of £5 per head for the Gaelic-speaking population.

Mr. Younger

I expect to increase direct Government grant to organisations which are working to maintain and improve the standing of Gaelic language and culture by about 5 per cent. in 1984–85. It will continue to be for the local authorities concerned to decide what priority they give to supporting Gaelic.
