HC Deb 21 March 1984 vol 56 c457W
37. Mr. Hal Miller

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if any analysis has been made of the years in which the service of expatriate civil servants in Hong Kong will end; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

No such analysis has been made. The Hong Kong Government at present employ some 3,200 civil servants on overseas terms. Of these, over 70 per cent. are on renewable two and a half to three year contracts. Thus, the total period which they will serve is unknown. The remainder are career officers who normally retire at 55.
