asked the Secretary of State for Transport what rail electrification programmes are under construction or planned at the present time.

British Rail is engaged on the following electrification schemes:

  • Colchester to Ipswich, Harwich and Norwich
  • Bishops Stortford to Cambridge
  • Tonbridge to Hastings
  • Paisley to Ayr and Ardrossan
  • Dalston to North Woolwich
  • Rock Ferry to Hooton
  • Manchester to Glossop and Hadfield.
