§ Baroness Davidasked Her Majesty's Government:
What is the evidence that increased levels of expenditure on research in the natural sciences and technology will increase the rate of economic growth in the United Kingdom.
§ Lord CockfieldAmerican work has found a relationship between R & D expenditures and productivity growth; British analysis has found patenting activity to be associated with increased export shares; and numerous case studies have illustrated the relationship between a firm's investment in technology and its competitive success. Most analysts agree that expenditure on science and technology needs to be accompanied by attention to 965WA the levels of qualified manpower, to design, quality and the enginering dimension and to market research and marketing for commercial success and growth to follow. A greater concentration on the use of British design talent would strengthen the link between innovation and success in the market place.
