asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he believes the Government's measures to prevent and deter crime will show results.

Mr. Hurd

The Government's measures, and those of the police and other agencies, should be seen as part of the response to a problem which the whole community must help to tackle. There have been encouraging signs recently but the results can be judged properly only in the long term.
