HL Deb 15 March 1984 vol 449 c965WA
Lord Northbourne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether adequate provision is being made for the preservation of the archaeological heritage of Canterbury in the light of the Department of the Environment's grant of only £24,023 to the Canterbury Archaeological Trust for the year 1983–4, in contrast to approximately £240,000 granted to the York Archaeological Trust for the same period.

Lord Skelmersdale

The Department of the Environment has authorised further grants totalling £14,875 for use by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1983–4. Grants for rescue archaeology are made towards specific projects which are assessed on their merits. It is thus not possible to equate the needs of Canterbury with those of York.
