Mr. Dorrell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total expenditure of the Overseas Development Administration on population-related activities in the bilateral aid programme for 1982 and 1983.

Mr. Raison

The total expenditure on population-related activities from the bilateral aid programme for 1982 was £3.183 million. Expenditure figures for 1983 are not yet available.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which countries received assistance for population-related activities under the Overseas Development Administration bilateral aid programme in 1982 and 1983.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will publish a list of the proposals for bilateral aid assistance to population-related activities he is at present considering, setting out which countries are involved and the estimated cost of the proposals.

The following projects are under consideration:

  1. (a) Population projects in Bangladesh, Malawi, the costs of which are not yet known and Pakistan, estimated cost £3.1 million, and
  2. (b) A health project, with a minor family planning element, in The Gambia, exact inputs and costs under discussion.

In addition the following research projects are under consideration:

  • Contraceptive failure in Northern Thai Women. Estimated cost £26,600.
  • Studies on use effectiveness of injectable contraceptives in Northern Thailand. Cost not known.
  • Generating early and effective contraceptive use in rural Egypt. Estimated cost £26,800.
  • Health and Child Mortality, India. Estimated cost £26,600.
  • Investigation into the impact of Gonoshasthya Kendra projects on fertility, morbidity and mortality in Savar, Bangladesh. Estimated cost £20,600.
