Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what British Army units visited Oman during the last 12 months; how many soldiers were involved; and what were the reasons for these visits.

Mr. Stanley

British Army units comprising some 200 soldiers have visited Oman during the last 12 months for exercises.

Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many British Army and Royal Air Force officers have been seconded during the past 12 months to serve with Oman's armed forces; and what is their role.

Mr. Stanley

At present there are some 80 British Army and Royal Air Force loan service officers helping with the training and development of the Sultan of Oman's armed forces. About half of these officers arrived in the past year to replace those whose tours had been completed.
