HC Deb 13 March 1984 vol 56 cc84-5W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Lord Privy Seal what is the average Commons pension payment now being paid to former Members of the House.

Mr. Biffen

The average of the total parliamentary pensions paid to former Members is £4,863 (rounded to the nearest pound).

Mr. Winnick

asked the Lord Privy Seal what is the average Commons pension now being paid to widows of former Members of the House.

Mr. Biffen

The average of the parliamentary pensions payable to widows/widowers of former Members is £2,472 (rounded to the nearest pound).

Mr. Winnick

asked the Lord Privy Seal what is the number of former Members of the House who are not eligible for a Commons pension.

Mr. Biffen

The information is not available since records of former Members, whose service ended before 16 October 1964, were not kept.

A total of 93 former Members, who served some time after 16 October 1964, left with no entitlement to benefit other than a refund of their own contributions.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Lord Privy Seal what is the Commons pension now paid to a Member who has retired after 15 years, 18 years, 20 years and 25 years membership; and on what basis the sums are assessed for pension purposes.

Mr. Biffen

A Member aged 65 years or over leaving the House of Commons on 12 March 1984 after 15 years service would receive a pension of £3,817 per annum; after 18 years £4,580 per annum; after 20 years, £5,089 per annum, and after 25 years, £6,361 per annum. The pensions quoted are based on relevant terminal salary, that is, the gross salary of a Member in the year ended 12 March 1984; and are rounded to the nearest pound.
