HC Deb 13 March 1984 vol 56 cc111-2W
Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government will make representations to the Government of Greece about their proposed violation of the provisions of the treaty of guarantee for Cyprus by the movement of a battalion of Greek troops to Cyprus.

Mr. Whitney

We have not been informed of any decision to move a battalion of Greek troops to Cyprus. We believe that all parties should refrain from any action which would exacerbate the situation or make a solution to the Cyprus problem more difficult to find.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the restrictions placed on the stationing of troops by the guarantor powers by the treaty of guarantee for Cyprus.

Mr. Whitney

The treaty of guarantee contains no specific restrictions or other provision regarding the stationing of troops by the guarantor powers.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has been officially informed by the Governments concerned of the joint decision by Greece and the Greek Cypriot Government to increase both the military presence and armaments in southern Cyprus as a contribution to a change in the present systems of government on the island; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

We are not aware of any such decision. I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave earlier concerning the British Government's attitude to developments which might exacerbate the situation in Cyprus.
