asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is his latest estimate of the cost of the Severn barrage scheme at current prices.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The Severn barrage committee estimated a capital cost of £5,660 million in December 1980 prices for its preferred scheme. On the basis of general inflation, I would expect the equivalent figure at current prices to be in the region of £7 billion.
