HC Deb 08 March 1984 vol 55 c658W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons have been charged, and with which offences, as a result of violence at the Waterloo cup hare coursing event at Altcar, Merseyside, on 22 February; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Hurd

The chief constable of Lancashire, whose force area includes Altcar, tells me that four people were arrested on Wednesday 22 February. One was charged under section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, one with the use of threatening behaviour conducive to a breach of the peace, another with that offence and assault on a police officer, and the fourth with obstructing an officer in the course of his duty. Because of other incidents, involving both demonstrators and people engaged in the hare coursing, there was a total of a further 26 arrests on 19 to 21 February, inclusive, for offences including criminal damage, obstruction of the police and of the highway, the use of threatening behaviour and breach of the peace.
