HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 cc538-9W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the percentage of unemployed youth in the Merseyside special development area and the Liverpool travel-to-work area at the latest date; and what were the comparable figures for 1 June 1979;

(2) what is the level of youth unemployment for (a) the Merseyside special development area and (b) the Liverpool travel-to-work area at the latest date; and what were the comparable figures for June 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

Percentage rates of unemployment by age are not available below national level due to the absence of employment estimates by age. Analyses of the unemployed by age are available quarterly and the following table gives the numbers of registered unemployed claimants in January 1984, together with the figures for October 1982 on both the registration and claimant bases. The figures are not seasonally adjusted; in particular, the figures for July 1979 are seasonally high due to new school leavers registering as unemployed.

Unemployed aged under 18
Liverpool travel-to-work area Merseyside special development area
Registered unemployed
July 1979 10,375 15,900
October 1982 6,146 9,804
Unemployed claimants
October 1982 6,203 9,404
January 1984 5,307 8,250

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report (a) the number and (b) the percentage of unemployed youth in the special development areas at the latest date and the comparative figures for June 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
