The totals eligible are derived by applying estimates of take-up ratios calculated from Family Expenditure Survey (FES) data. Allocations of recipients and of eligible cases to household types for 1982 are calculated from their distributions in the FES samples for 1981 and 1982 combined because of the small sample sizes. Even so, all the estimates are subject to wide margins of uncertainty. † Pensioner households are those where the head of the household is of pensionable age. ‡ The FES sample also indicates a very small number of sample cases of children (dependent on the head of household) in households headed by pensioners; such cases are included in the "other pensioner households" category. ║ The figures for rent allowances refer to the privately rented unfurnished sector only; the sample numbers for non-pensioner recipients are too small to provide meaningful estimates. ¶ All numbers exclude households receiving supplementary benefit.
