HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 cc478-9W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many cases involving death or injury in Northern Ireland caused by plastic bullets have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. Scott

Since 1 January 1981 a total of 51 cases involving death or injury allegedly caused as the result of the use of baton rounds have been referred by the police to the Director of Public Prosecutions for Northern Ireland. Information prior to this date could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland who manufactures the plastic bullets supplied to the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Mr. Scott

Supplies of baton rounds have been obtained by the Police Authority for Northern Ireland from the Ministry of Defence and from commercial sources. It is not considered to be in the public interest to publish the names of individual manufacturers of plastic baton rounds supplied to the police.
