Mr. kin Millsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many motorists were prosecuted for driving with defective tyres in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983; and how many prosecutions made for driving with defective tyres resulted in convictions in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.
§ Mr. HurdInformation on findings of guilt at magistrates' courts for offences relating to defective tyres is published annually in table 4 of "Offences relating to motor vehicles, England and Wales, supplmentary tables" a copy of which is in the Library of the House. Information on proceedings for offences of a vehicle or part of a vehicle being in defective condition, which includes offences relating to defective tyres, is given in the same publication (in table 1 for magistrates' courts and in table 7 for proceedings at the Crown court for sentencing after summary conviction).
Separate figures for prosecutions for offences of defective tyres in 1982 are given in the table following. Provision of similar figures for 1980 and 1981 would involve disproportionate cost. Figures for 1983 are not yet available.
