Mr. Rooker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Birmingham, Perry Barr, on 27 February, what was the total number of in-depth investigations of accounts of companies, partnerships and trusts in the year ended 31 October 1983, including those which resulted in increased tax being payable.

[pursuant to his reply, 2 March 1984, c. 363]: The total number of investigations in-depth, including those which resulted in increased tax being payable, in the respective categories of taxpayer referred to was:

Investigation
i. Companies in year ended 31 October 1983 5,326 accounts
ii. Partnerships in year ended 31 October 1982 9,801 accounts
iii. Trusts in year ended 31 October 1982 849 cases

The figures for partnerships and trusts in the year ended 31 October 1983 are not yet available. The latest figures are given above and are consistent with those given in the reply to the hon. Member for Birmingham, Perry Barr, on 27 February 1984, at columns 48–9.
