HC Deb 01 March 1984 vol 55 c330W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list those organisations which have made representations to him concerning, "Streamlining the Cities", as it affects Greater Manchester, indicating which were (a) in favour and (b) against the proposals.

Mr. Waldegrave

We have not yet completed our analysis of the responses to the White Paper.

Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received from organisations in the constituency of Brent, South in response to his White Paper, Cmnd. 9063, "Streamlining the Cities"; and which of them were in favour of, or against, abolition of the Greater London council.

Mr. Waldegrave

Such representations could be identified only at disproportionate expense.

Mr. Allen McKay

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in the light of the second report of Coopers and Lybrand concerning the abolition of the county councils and the Greater London council, he remains satisfied that £120 million savings will result from the abolition; and what services to the public he now expects to be cut.

Mr. Waldegrave

Nothing in the Coopers & Lybrand report, which dealt only with the Metropolitan county councils, leads me to change my view of the savings that will be achieved by eliminating an unnecessary tier of local government.
