§ Mr. Alan ClarkThe Government have taken a number of important steps since 1979 to encourage industrial development and employment in Liverpool. The Merseyside task force was specifically set up to liaise with local authorities, public agencies and the private sector to take employment-creating initiatives in the area. Liverpool has been chosen as an experimental free port location and the Speke area is an enterprise zone. In addition to these specific initiatives, Liverpool has benefited from a large amount of assistance under national employment and training schemes, such as the youth training scheme, community programme and the young workers scheme.
