HC Deb 26 June 1984 vol 62 c412W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied that current hygiene legislation is adequate to control the growing practice of so-called scoop and save shopping methods.

Mr. John Patten

The law requires that food offered for sale shall not be so placed as to involve any risk of contamination. The doubts surrounding the practice to which my hon. Friend refers—which also goes by the description of "pack your own food"—concern the extent to which it gives rise to any risk to health. Officials of our Department are shortly to discuss the matter with representatives of the local authority associations and of the Institution of Environmental Health Officers.
