HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 c258W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many children he estimates will be leaving school in 1984; how many of these will be likely to find employment in the open market; and what percentage of school leavers in 1982 found such employment within three months of becoming available for work.

Mr. Younger

The number of children leaving Scottish schools in summer 1984 is expected to be about 68,000. It is not known how many of these will seek or find employment.

It is estimated that 30 per cent. of those who left school in summer 1982 had found employment by October 1982.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the number of children who left school in Scotland in 1982 and 1983 who are still unemployed.

Mr. Younger

I regret that this information is not available in the form requested. It is not possible to identify from benefit claimant records the precise date at which those currently recorded as unemployed terminated their course of full-time education.
