HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 c211W
16. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what have been the annual increases in police pay since 1979; and what were the reasons for those increases.

Mr. Brittan

Since May 1979, when the pay increases recommended by the Edmund-Davies committee were implemented in full, the basic pay of police officers below the rank of assistant chief constable has been updated with effect from 1 September each year in line with the increase in the average earnings index during the previous 12 months, as recommended by that committee. This produced increases of 13.5 per cent. in 1979, 21.3 per cent. in 1980, 13.2 per cent. in 1981, 10.4 per cent. in 1982 and 8.3 per cent.in 1983.
