asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current fee paid to doctors for performing sterilisation in (a) men and (b) women.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The fee paid to NHS hospital doctors for male sterilisation is:

Operating fee £ Anaesthetist fee £
i. as a separate procedure 36.35 17.90
ii. during the course of another procedure 24.60 11.90
The fee for female sterilisation is:
i. as a separate procedure 49.20 24.05
ii. during the course of another procedure 32.90 16.10

We shall review these fees with effect from 1 April 1984 in the light of the recommendations of the Doctors and Dentists Review Body.

Hospital and community doctors may also carry out sterilisations on a sessional basis.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will give a breakdown by region of the numbers of sterilisations performed on (a) men and (b) women in the last year for which figures are available;

(2) how many sterilisations have been performed under the National Health Service in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available on (a) men and (b) women.
