§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what criteria he uses to measure or assess the performance of maintained secondary schools.
§ Mr. DunnMy right hon. Friend bases his assessment of the performance of maintained secondary schools largely on the reports he receives from Her Majesty's Inspectorate, both on individual schools and more widely, and on information from the Assessment of Performance Unit about national levels of performance in some key areas of the curriculum. Public examination results can also provide useful information. The Department is currently undertaking a pilot study concerned with means for assessing schools' examination results in relation to their circumstances.
