HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 cc342-4W
Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will publish a table indicating for the most recently available date the staffing of the Building Research Establishment in the manner of the answer to the hon. Member for Rutland and Melton on 28 April 1983, Official Report columns 384–85; what is the current shortfall of staff in post compared with the authorised complement (a) overall and (b) in the science category; and what is the proposed complement for 1984–85.

Sir George Young

The manpower allocation for the Building Research Establishment — excluding that for compiling fire statistics, the responsibility and complement for which were transferred from the Establishment to the Home Office on 1 April 1984 — was 805 at 1 April 1984 and is 781 for 1 April 1985, subject to revision after study of requirements to staff a publications sales office at Garston. There were 789 staff in post on 1 April 1984. On that date there were(a) overall 16 fewer staff than allowed for in the complement and (b) in the science category 6 fewer staff than in the complement. Following is a detailed table.

Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will make a statement on the achievements and publications since 3 May 1983 of the structural integrity division of the Building Research Establishment; and that is its current programme of work.

Sir George Young

Since 3 May 1983 structural integrity division have concentrated upon the completion of studies of 13 pre-fabricated reinforced concrete house systems. However, an additional 5 investigations have been completed either to assess the implications of structural failures or developments in constructional methods and materials. The current programme of work, which includes specific investigations as well as essential background research is detailed in the BRE research programme 1984–85 which was published on 8 June and a copy of which I have arranged to be sent to my hon. Friend.

In addition to those listed in May 1983, reports have been published on the following subjects:

  1. 1. Prefabricated reinforced concrete houses (8 published, the remainder to be published shortly).
  2. 2. Performance and durability of masonry/brickwork and wall ties (7 published).
  3. 3. Assessment of durability, stability of large structures (2).
  4. 4. Backfilling old limestone mines with colliery waste (1).
  5. 5. Appraisals of buildings with long span roofs, use of glass reinforced cement in cladding; high alumina cement in existing building superstructures (3).
