HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 c63W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many serving teachers have gained degrees of the Open University since the first degrees were awarded in 1972; and how many of these had studied courses in mathematics, science and technology within their degrees.

Mr. Dunn

The latest information available to the Department is for 31 March 1983, when there were 12,263 full-time teachers in service in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England and Wales who were recorded as having an Open University degree. This figure excludes teachers who already had a degree before obtaining one from the Open University. The Open University does not award degrees in respect of specific subjects or disciplines and there is therefore insufficient information on the teachers' records to answer the second part of the question.
