HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 c83W
Mr. Needham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish figures for the median income, both before and after tax, for all years from 1969–70 in which there has been a survey of personal incomes, in similar terms to those given in the summary tables for the years 1949–50 through to 1969–70 published on page 2 of the survey of 1969–70.

Mr. Moore

Estimates of median income from the annual surveys of personal incomes (which do not cover non-taxable income, nor those whose income is not high enough to be taxable) are given below. The information is based on tax units, ie a married couple is counted as one unit. For years up to and including 1975, incomes are after allowable deductions such as mortgage interest. From 1975–76, incomes are before allowable deductions. The 1975–76 median income, both before and after tax, was about £100 lower when measured after allowable deductions.
