HL Deb 31 July 1984 vol 455 c781WA
Lord Melchett

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their policy to pay hill livestock compensatory allowances in cases where the stocking density on the land in question exceeds that recommended by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland or college advisers.

Lord Gray of Contin

Hill livestock compensatory allowances are reduced if, in my department's opinion, the stocking density on the eligible land is such that the stock cannot be substantially maintained on that land without over-grazing: and are also limited to a maximum payment of £60 a hectare.
