Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many people originally sent to prison for 30 days are still there after five months or more;

(2) how many people originally sent to prison for a fixed period are still there after that period has expired.

Central records are held in a form such that the information requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

However, no person is detained beyond the period required by their sentence unless there are other and separate grounds for their continued detention.
